Barbara J Hasselmann (Jones)

Barbara Hasselmann, Scott’s mother, passed away on September 4, 2012 after bravely fighting cancer for the past 4 months. Many of our customers may know her from picking up orders from her home in Arlington Heights.

She was a intregal part of Hasselmann Family Farm, beginning with her encouragement of the undertaking of starting the farm 6 years ago. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Jones from Preston, MN,  Barb grew up on a grain and livestock farm in Southwestern Minnesota and was raised as a farm girl (and thus very familiar with farm life!) During her childhood she participated in 4H showing cattle and, as most farm kids do, helped with chores on the farm. After high school she studied teaching at Central College in Pella, Iowa. Upon graduating from Central she moved to St. Charles, Illinois to teach French and English. There, she met a local mushroom grower from Elk Grove Village named George Hasselmann Jr. In storybook fashion, they were married shortly thereafter in Preston, MN by a Rev. Walter Pickup. George would often joke happily that he was married to Farmer Jones’s daughter by Rev. Pickup. Their marriage lasted 41 wonderful years until her death this September.

Barb’s experience growing up on a farm in a vibrant rural community helped her to value farm life and the life Scott and Nena are trying to create for their children. She was a constant source of support & council to Scott & Nena during the farms founding, and was an active participant in many functions of the farm throughout the years. From order fulfillment, help with marketing, reaching out to customers – she was always willing to lend a hand and this farm will not be the same without her.

Barb was a woman of faith, conviction & commitment, and besides her commitment to the farm she was also a Shaklee salesperson for 30 years, an avid golfer, a long-time church choir member and spent the last 10 years serving on the Stephen Ministry & Living Nativity at her church.

She will be missed terribly by her husband George, son George “Scott”, daughter-in-law Nena and grandchildren George & Alexia.
